Hello everyone! My Name is Doug Antonacci I am the owner of Daddy O's Music Shack in Springfield, IL.
From time to time, I will be submitting tips to the MSO site for bassists, and for those that are lucky enough to become one someday.
For the first edition of the MSO Bass Lines article I thought I might let you low-end freaks in on some relatively unknown info that can help offset your gear costs. We all know that getting new gear is the greatest, but we don't always have the cash for it. I am here to tell you that being a loyal shopper to your neighborhood local music store can get you some killer deals on new gear, especially if you are playing quite often in your local scene.
So how do you get great deals? Most of you don't know this, but many manufacturers will offer some type of "Local talent" endorsement deal.
Talk to your local music store about whether the brands you use offer the opportunity to get basses and/or other equipment at a better than average discount. The manufacturer's rep may wish to review your band's schedule to see how much exposure you are getting in the community. Being in just a garage band wont cut it.
Sometimes the owner or manager of the local store may have the ability to make the decision themselves. If you've been a loyal customer, they should be able to get it passed through relatively easy. Each manufacturer has their own set of rules.
Of course you will be required to use those items and to promote the store from whom you bought them at each gig. The pros have to represent their gear, and you will be expected to do the same. So it's important to like what you are using, and not just buy it because "It's a great deal."
It's a win-win for everyone. The manufacturer and store get their name out in the public eye, and you get a break on expenses.
Not only did I get my bass this way, I also got listed on the manufacturer's website as an official endorser.
Getting an endorsement deal is a great feeling. And it can happen to you too if you have a good relationship with your local, independant music store.
Until next time, keep rockin'!
