Coalition of Over 250 Independent Music Merchants forms with merger of IMRA and MSO.


History was made February 27th when the directors of MusicStoreOwners.com (MSO), (the very popular WEB forum for indie music merchants) joined the Board of the Independent Music Retailers Association (IMRA).

The agreement was sealed by unanimous vote. The directors of MSO and the interim IMRA executive committee now form the permanent IMRA Board of Directors.

Gordy Wilcher (Owensboro Music Center) was voted President of IMRA. Gordy has been a member of both the MSO directors and the IMRA. According to IMRA Board member Frank Hayhurst (Zone Music) “Gordy was elected because he embodies the proactive, cooperative and highly personable community oriented style that independents recognize as the model for success in the current challenging economy.”

Fender is sure to get an Ovation with its latest move. The Scottsdale, Ariz., company bought Kaman Corp.’s music division for $117 million on Oct. 29. Kaman owns the Ovation, Toca, Gibraltar, Genz Benz, and Hamer brands. Kaman is also the U.S. representative for Sabian cymbals, as well as the worldwide distributor for Takamine guitars and Gretsch drums. Dealers will continue to be served by Kaman Music. Kaman CEO Paul Kuhn said the sale made sense because his company wants to focus on its aerospace and industrial distribution segments. The deal is expected to close on Jan. 1.
